January 18, 2019

I visited Los Angeles at the height of the fires over Malibu.  These are the views from my hotel in Santa Monica, as fires raged for days, people lost their whole neighborhoods, there was fear that it would spread and threaten LA proper.  There were prayers for rain, but none in the forecast.  As the air quality deteriorated, outdoor activities impossible, I cut short my visit.

Later I wrote the following haiku.

Fear of Fire

Clear sky, nearly white.
Dry as kindling, fear of heat.
It won’t rain tonight.
